Currently enrolled students can update the legal name and directory name in their student record through the Registrar.
Your directory name is used in places such as:
- MIT Directory (available to the general public)
- Class lists
- Registration status and grade reports
- Student accounts
- MIT ID card
- Loan documents
Your legal name is used in places such as:
- Transcripts
- Tax forms
- Visa documents
Additional Considerations and Processes
Once you have confirmed that your name change is reflected in the MIT Atlas app or the public directory, there are a few additional places and processes you may want or need to complete.
[Accordion A1 – A5]
Obtain a New Physical MIT ID [A1]
You can print a new physical ID at one of the on campus kiosks or by visiting the Atlas Service Center.
Update Your Kerberos Username [A2]
The process of changing a username is possible though complicated, as it can potentially affect many systems. Changing your username will require scheduling a time with IS&T to execute the change and check on various systems with you to ensure your access is not disrupted. Contact the IS&T Service Desk by calling 617-253-1101 or emailing servicedesk@mit.edu.
Suppress Directory Information [A3]
By default, the MIT directory publicly displays biographical information about students. You can opt out of the MIT Directory by filling out a form.

Change Your Zoom Display Name [A4]
You can change your display name on Zoom through an administrative name change. Some students may still have trouble with their display name and might need to work with IS&T. You may do that by emailing IS&T directly and providing the following information:
- Kerberos username
- Current display name as it appears on Zoom
- Exact name you would like displayed
Changes Related to Graduation [A5]
You can change the way your first and middle names appear on your diploma within the degree application without going through a legal name change on the Registrar’s website. You can also keep your legal name on your diploma but have your directory name read out loud at graduation.
To learn more about that please email are Philip Caudillo at philipc@mit.edu.
