Student organizations may promote blood donation drives or donor registry swabbing campaigns (for bone marrow matching, stem cell therapies, or other medical procedures) through promotional booths or tables in approved areas. All intake activities, including collection of personal information, consent forms, medical screening, and biological specimens, must occur in a reserved space that ensures privacy for participants. Intake activities may not take place in open public spaces such as hallways, common areas, lobbies, or outdoor event locations.
All participants must be informed, either directly by the event organizer or by supporting volunteers, about what data will be collected, the duration of its retention, and the process for withdrawing or opting out after giving consent.
For all cheek-swab collections, organizers must either have participants collect their own samples or have trained clinical personnel perform the collection procedure. If swabbing is performed by trained clinical personnel, the activity must occur at MIT Medical or the Clinical Center for Translational Research (CCTR), in coordination with MIT EHS biosafety procedures.
Student organizations planning blood donation or donor-registry events must coordinate with SOLE and register the activity in Atlas at least 10 working days prior to the event.
