Undergraduate Residential Experience
The undergraduate residential experience provides more than just a place to sleep at night. Students who live in the undergraduate houses build a strong connection to their community through leadership opportunities, and relationships with mentors, staff, and faculty who live in community with them.
Elements of Community Living
Elements serve as the fundamental building blocks of matter. At MIT, the Elements of Community are the fundamental building blocks for our residential living spaces. They shape our traditions, the ways we engage with one another, and help us learn to “work wisely, creatively, and effectively for the betterment of humankind.”
Connection
We are connected to each other, and our individual actions have an impact on all members of our community.
Perspectives
We each hold different perspectives, and value these various perspectives as contributing to the strength and uniqueness of our communities.
Growth
We best learn, change, and grow in community with others by assuming good intentions when possible.
Responsibility
We are responsible for our words and actions. We show respect to others through honest, reliable, and accountable behavior.
Respect
We clearly communicate our own boundaries and respect the boundaries of others.
Undergraduate Affinity and Cultural Spaces
Cultural and affinity-based living communities support student success by fostering connection, understanding, and engagement. These are environments where students can explore shared backgrounds or interests, while actively contributing to a diverse, inclusive residential experience for all. Undergraduates have an opportunity to live in one of MIT’s cultural or affinity living communities. Students are housed in these communities through an application process.
