The Residential Experience

Residences are vibrant communities ideally suited for living and learning. Each residence has its own culture and customs, created by students and supported by live-in faculty heads of house, peer leaders, and professional staff.

Our residences and programming support the art of conversation and connection, a spirit of community inquiry, and lifelong leadership development. Here you can expand and explore your identity and build vital connections.

A Range of Options

Each of our 20 residence halls offers a unique living community for students. Our robust guides will help you explore your options and find the right space for you to connect and engage on campus.

Undergraduate Housing

Each of our residence halls has their own unique community where students find a sense of belonging they’ll carry forward into lives of impact, engagement, and connection.

Graduate Housing

MIT’s graduate residences are special places where ideas are exchanged, friendships are forged, and families are embraced.

Fraternities, Sororities, and Independent Living Groups

MIT students can choose to live with 26 fraternities, 10 sororities, and 5 independent living groups. Approximately 37% undergraduates belong to one of 43 recognized FSILGs.

Off-Campus Housing

Even if you choose to live off-campus, Housing & Residential Services supports students with questions about leases and the local rental market.

Residential Safety and Security

We are committed to providing a safe and secure housing environment that supports the wellbeing of all students, faculty, and staff. Our security teams work with House Teams and residents to maintain community standards of conduct and prevent harm.

All residential security questions can be directed to housingsecurity@mit.edu. In the event of an emergency, contact the MIT Police at 617-253-1212 or by dialing 100 from any MIT phone.
