Our Mission

We build community by providing a myriad of educational and social opportunities for students and over 70 cultural and identity-based student organizations.

We also provide a physical SPXCE (W31-110; pronounced space) that encourages learning about personal identity while valuing and respecting others. SPXCE is a place for ongoing learning, growth, and innovation; a place where healthy conversations about belonging are not only encouraged, but celebrated.

Our Vision

We empower students through programming and outreach, by giving them the tools, skills and knowledge to engage in healthy dialogue about identity and belonging on and off the MIT campus.

Our Core Values

WE CARE for our community by:

  • Welcoming and connecting students to resources at MIT
  • Educating students about leadership, identity, and belonging
  • Community building through programming and events where students and student organizations can make meaningful connections
  • Advocating on students’ behalf
  • Respecting and celebrating students uniqueness; appreciating all their intersecting identities
  • Engaging students in culturally rich dialogues while supporting them through the difficult conversations

Signature Programs

The mission of the Multicultural Conference (MC^2) is to create space to engage in thoughtful dialogue about identity, culture, wellbeing, and belonging. Workshops are led by MIT faculty and staff and are designed to not only teach you skills, but how to use those skills in discourse with peers, friends, colleagues and more. This overnight conference offers both team-building activities and a thought-provoking day of individual and group learning, reflection, and action-planning.

The RISE Awards – Recognizing Individuals Supporting Equity – is an opportunity to celebrate MIT faculty, staff, and students on their work with diversity, inclusion, and social justice on and off campus. MIT community members nominate their peers and colleagues for these awards. The RISE AWARDS is a collaboration sponsored by Intercultural Engagement (i.e.), Institute Community and Equity Office (ICEO), LBGTQ+ Services, Women and Gender Services (WXGS), Office of Graduate Education (OGE), and Office of Minority Education (OME).
