Campus Communities
Life at MIT isn’t limited to the classroom. Whether you want to connect with peers or become a student leader, we can help you find the right organization, event, or living community to make you feel at home.

Student Organization, Leadership and Engagement Office (SOLE)
SOLE provides an environment for students to test new ideas, develop leadership skills, and create community at MIT. We serve the 350+ student organizations by providing guidance, tools, expertise, and resources to assist student leaders in implementing impactful programming across the Institute.
A Hub for Students
As a hub for student engagement and leadership development, we work with students and Institute stakeholders to:
- Develop opportunities for students to implement impactful programming
- Become value-oriented leaders
- Broaden their understanding and competencies in the area of inclusivity and advocacy
Advisor & Thought Partner
We act as an advisor and thought partner to the Institute’s programming boards, student governing bodies, and over 500 organizations by providing guidance, tools, expertise, and resources.
Engage
As an MIT student, you can access information about all organizations and clubs on Engage (login required). Each student organization has its own page where you can:
- Find out how to join an org!
- Learn about upcoming events, Institute-wide
- Network and communicate with members and other club officers
The vision of the SOLE Office is to create a community where all students feel a sense of belonging at the Institute, participate in meaningful and memorable co-curricular experiences, and are empowered to create positive change within and outside of the MIT community.
Campus Activities Complex
The Campus Activities Complex (CAC) supports the Institute’s living-learning activities with its range of facilities, programs, and services. Through collaborative efforts, the CAC:
- Builds community by bringing students, faculty, staff, and alumni together to socialize, interact, create, and share knowledge
- Supports and advocates for students and the greater MIT community concerning space management, event planning and support, and hands-on learning opportunities
- Provides a safe and supportive environment for activities to take place
CAC stewards the campus commons, and its facilities serve as important centers for student and community life with programs, events, and services. CAC builds bridges between diverse MIT constituencies to create dialogue and the exchange of ideas.
Event Spaces

We also play a critical role in supporting MIT community members in planning, creating, and implementing events across campus. We can help you reserve the right space and equipment to host your next social gathering, meeting, or ceremony
Student Community Facilities
Stratton Student Center
Centrally located, the Stratton Student Center offers places to gather, study, dine, do errands, and relax. MIT students view the Student Center as their out-of-the-classroom home.
Hobby Shop
The MIT Hobby Shop is a fully equipped wood and metal shop that teaches students the art of thoughtful design and craft. Projects can be academic or personal, serious or just for fun.
Housing Communities
Whether you’re an undergraduate or graduate student, you’ll find a vibrant and diverse housing community on campus. You can choose to live in one of our 11 residence halls or join one of our 26 fraternities, 10 sororities, and five independent living groups.
Fraternities, Sororities and Independent Living Groups
At MIT, the Fraternity, Sorority, and Independent Living Group (FSILG) community offers a vibrant pathway for students seeking connection and personal growth. These student-led organizations provide close-knit communities where members build strong friendships and valuable support networks within the larger Institute.
Beyond social and residential life, FSILGs serve as dynamic environments for leadership development, presenting numerous opportunities for students to take initiative, manage chapter operations, organize events, and contribute meaningfully to their group and the broader MIT community.
