Pastor David Um was born in Seoul, South Korea, and grew up in NY with his soul set on attending MIT. At MIT, David became a Christian, finding the real M.I.T. (Most Important Thing) in life is an eternal relationship with Jesus, and believing “mens et manus” is important, but only “spiritus” can fill the God-shaped void in people’s’ hearts. So, David began MIT’s chapter of Asian Baptist Student Koinonia, soon after it was founded by Dr. Rebekah Kim at Harvard. David has an SB from MIT in Mechanical Engineering, an MDiv from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary, a DMin from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary, and was ordained a Southern Baptist pastor under Dr. Paul Kim. David has been an MIT chaplain since 2015, is currently Senior Pastor of Antioch Baptist Church in Cambridge, and resides in Cambridge with his wife and whichever among the three children haven’t moved out yet.
