Undergraduate students may request to be excused from missed academic work under certain circumstances.
An excused absence, or “OX” grade, is a temporary grade similar to an “Incomplete.” It is an appropriate grading option for students who have been progressing satisfactorily in the class but miss a final exam or coursework during the last two weeks of the semester due to extenuating medical or personal issues.
Graduate students should speak with staff in the Office of the Dean for Graduate Education regarding excused absences.
Requesting an OX Grade
Discuss the option of an OX grade with your professor and a dean in Student Support Services(S3). If the OX is deemed appropriate, your professor will issue an O grade indicating there is missing work, and the dean in S3 will issue the X allowing the opportunity for the you to complete the missed work.
Expectations of an OX Grade
Arrangements for completing missed work is determined and agreed upon between you and your professor. Faculty are encouraged to allow students to make up outstanding work before the start of the next semester.
When the work is completed and a final grade is determined, that grade will replace the OX on the transcript. An O must be converted into an OX before a grade can be assigned. An O without an X counts as an F toward your GPA.
If the you do not complete a subject with an OX, the OX will remain on your record and will not impact your GPA. You can graduate with an unfinished OX on your transcript as long as it is not a degree requirement.
