Sublicensing

Are you interested in sublicensing your currently assigned unit or interested in living on-campus during the Summer, Winter Break or the Independent Activities Period (IAP)? If so, you’ve come to the right place! Please see below for important information regarding the MIT graduate housing sublicensing process.   • find apartments or rooms on campus that are available to sublicense from the current resident

  • post your own MIT room or apartment for sublicensing by another MIT affiliate

  Terminology
 

Residents of MIT graduate housing have the ability to rent their on-campus housing unit to members of the MIT community during the Summer, Winter Break, and the Independent Activities Period (IAP).  For a number of reasons, the law categorizes resident contracts as “licenses” rather than “leases,” which is why the sublicense terminology is used rather than the common term "sublet". 

If you are the legal license holder of a unit in MIT on-campus housing (resident) and you would like to sublicense it to another MIT affiliate, you are the sublicensor. For more information, please see the Sublicensor Instructions Page.

Current MIT affiliate who sublicenses an MIT on-campus housing unit from a current legal license holder through the Sublicense process. For more information, please see the Sublicensee Instructions Page.

  General Sublicensing Rules
 

  • Sublicenses are only available during the summer and IAP/winter break. Visit our Dates & Deadlines for key sublicensing dates.

  • Sublicense advertisements are MIT Certificate protected. Only affiliates of MIT - students, faculty, staff, and visiting faculty, students, and scholars - are eligible to sublicense apartments. Alumni, families of students, Draper, Broad, and Whitehead employees are not eligible. Sublicenses can be advertised on the MIT Off-Campus website, but cannot be posted on any other site (e.g.., AirBnB, Craigslist, etc)

  • Undergraduate students living in graduate housing and residents of Sidney-Pacific quad suites are not eligible to sublicense their spaces.

  • A room may be sublicensed to someone of the opposite gender only with the written approval of all roommates in the suite/apartment.

  • A refundable deposit of up to $300 may be requested by the sublicensor

  • The space cannot be occupied until the sublicense has been approved by Housing & Residential Services. Money or keys should not be exchanged until both the sublicensor and sublicensee received a confirmation email from Housing & Residential Services.

  • Sublicense agreements are between members of the MIT community and are not an agreement with Housing & Residential Services.

  • The minimum time period for sublicensing is 14 days. Any sublicense request for less than the time period stated above will be denied.

  • Sublicensing a portion of a housing assignment (i.e. living room) is not permitted.

Residence Hall Access Information for Approved Sublicensees
 

In order to gain access to the residence hall for the time you have been approved by Housing and Residential Services (HRS) to sublicense, you will need to download the MIT Atlas mobile app.
 

  1. Download Atlas app
  2. Activate Mobile ID
  3. Turn on NFC
  4. Tap into the sublicense building with Mobile ID pulled up. It will take 30 minutes after you activate.

  2. Click on Mobile ID
  3. Add to Apple Wallet
  4. Tap access into sublicense building. It will take 30 minutes for access after you activate.


For those sublicensing in family housing, once you have provided the proof of family documentation and your sublicense has been approved by HRS, your partner and/or children will be sponsored by HRS for an MIT ID number and Kerberos account. At that time, you will receive an automated email from accounts@mit.edu providing you with the MIT ID and Kerberos account.

Partners and children over 5 years of age with an MIT ID number will have access to download the MIT Atlas Mobile app or get a physical MIT ID card for building access through their mobile phone.
