Spring and Fall Housing Switch Lotteries

What is the housing switch lottery?

Two switch lotteries are offered for registered MIT undergraduates who are currently living on campus and want to move to another building for the upcoming term. The lottery is a separate process from the waiting list and students on the waiting list must opt in to the switch lottery for the upcoming term. Students not on the waiting list may enter during the open period as well.

  • Students who wish to move to another building for the spring semester should enter the spring building switch lottery held in December. The application is typically available in November.

  • Students who wish to move for the following fall semester should enter the fall building switch lottery held in April. The application is typically available in March

  • Students who wish to move together in groups up to 4 may enter the switch lottery together. This is designed to allow roommates to stay together if they would like to switch together.

How does the lottery work?

Students should fill out a housing switch lottery application to indicate their building preferences, as well as their understanding that the lottery is binding. While we make every effort to assign students to their first preference, there is a possibility that a student may get switched into any one of the residence halls they list on their lottery form. NOTE: The switch lottery is only open to registered MIT undergraduate students living in one in one of the on-campus residence halls.

For students who would like to switch together, each person in the group must enter the switch lottery and list the other people they would like to switch together with. All applicants will be asked to confirm they want to switch together. Since this is a switch lottery and each move requires someone else to "switch," there is no guarantee that groups can be switched together. Each applicant in the group will be asked to prioritize what is most important to them - switching as a group together, switching to another building without the group, or that there is no priority.

If you are reassigned in the switch lottery, you must accept that assignment and move. It is not possible to decline the assignment you receive. Before you apply, please be absolutely certain that you will be willing to accept the results.

*If you will not be here during IAP, please do not enter the switch lottery. Join the waiting list for a move instead.

How do room assignments work?

Room assignments are done internally in each residence hall after the lottery results come out. Due to the processes in each house, the lottery does not take into account special requests for room type or location (unless there is a previously approved supplemental request). The lottery functions solely as a way to switch buildings.

Moves granted during the spring housing switch lottery have a move-in date during IAP in January, while moves made during the fall switch lottery take place on upperclass move-in day in September, unless the student has an early return. Students granted a move in either switch lottery will receive an email with their exact move date. No moves are permitted before these dates.
