Accessible Routes
The following are wheelchair accessible routes to popular campus locations.
The MIT Campus Accessibility Map is a map prepared by the MIT Planning Office. Copies are available in the DAS office (Room 5-104) and the MIT Events and Information Center (Room 7-121).
Note that directions use Lobby 7 (the main MIT lobby at the 77 Massachusetts Avenue entrance) as a starting point for all directions/routes.
Admissions Office - Room 3-108
Proceed east along the Infinite Corridor (opposite main entry) and the Admissions Office is a short distance down the hall in Building 3. Room 3-108 is on the right side of the hallway.
Building 34: Auditorium
Proceed east along the Infinite Corridor (opposite main entry) to the end of the corridor. Then, turn left to the elevator in Building 16. Go down ½ level. Turn left and then left again out power doors to side. Proceed right along the street to the far end. Go up the ramp to 34.
Or, you can go down to the basement in 16. Then turn left and proceed through building 26 into building 36. Then take the elevator to the first floor. Turn left to the auditorium in 34.
Admissions Office (Room 3-108)
Proceed east along the Infinite Corridor (opposite main entry) and the Admissions Office is a short distance down the hall in Building 3. Room 3-108 is on the right side of the hallway.
ATLAS Service Center (Building E17)
Turn left to the ramp leading outside to Mass Ave. Go right along Massachusetts Avenue to the lights at Vassar Street. Turn right onto Vassar and continue down Vassar to Main Street. At Main Street, turn right and continue until you reach Ames Street. Cross Ames Street and continue to Building E17 at 40 Ames Street. You will have to use the elevator to reach the ATLAS Service Center located on the first floor of E17 in Room 110.
Building 34 (Auditorium)
Proceed east along the Infinite Corridor (opposite main entry) to the end of the corridor. Then, turn left to the elevator in Building 16. Go down ½ level. Turn left and then left again out power doors to side. Proceed right along the street to the far end. Go up the ramp to 34. Or, you can go down to the basement in 16. Then turn left and proceed through building 26 into building 36. Then take the elevator to the first floor. Turn left to the auditorium in 34.
Building 37
This building is accessible from Vassar Street entrance and elevators. It also connects to 35 and 39 at the 4th floor which is part of the linkage to all parts of the main campus. (Remember that Building 39 is closed at the 4th floor necessitating a detour by elevator in 37 and 36 to the 3rd floors).
Building 46 (Third Floor Atrium)
This building is located on Vassar Street, opposite from the Stata Center. There is a ramp to the first floor entry and then an elevator which goes to the Atrium on the 3rd level. On the Main street side of this building, all entries are accessible. The entry at street level goes directly to an elevator that also goes to level 3.
Building NE47
This Tech Square building is accessible on both sides via ramps to the elevator lobby.
Building NW12
This building is accessible from the street by a large roll-up door. There is a small step at the door entry. Since this is a secure building, arrangements need to be made with the Reactor Superintendent, eslau [at] mit.edu. If a trip to the upper floor is needed, they can help out with a temporary ramp. There is also a circuitous route from the NW14 entry, but this also requires access into NW12.
Building NW17
Building W34
This building is fully accessible from its common area with W35 at the main entry to the Z-Center. The elevator goes to all floors. See W35 directions below for more detail.
Dewey Library (Building E53)
Proceed east along the Infinite Corridor (opposite main entry) to the end of the corridor. Turn right and pass through Building 6 to the main corridor to the left in Building 2. Pass down ramp into Hayden Library. At end of corridor exit the library down the ramp. Go right leaving the ramp continuing east past Walker on your right and tennis courts. Cross Ames Street and continue along the right side of Amherst Street to intersection with Wadsworth Street. Cross street, proceed left a short distance to the ramp at the Sloan Plaza and straight ahead to the ramp to E53.
Hayden Library (Building 14)
Proceed east along the Infinite Corridor (opposite main entry) to the end of the corridor. Turn right and pass through Building 6 to the main corridor to the left in Building 2. Pass down the ramp into Hayden Library. The Science and Humanities Library is on your right.
Kresge Auditorium (Building W16)
Proceed to the elevator behind left pier (opposite main entry) to the basement. Turn left to the ramp leading outside to Massachusetts Avenue. Cross the street at the lights and proceed straight ahead. Veer left on the sidewalk to bypass the steps. In front of Student Center continue left and then left again to Kresge.
Media Lab (Building E15)
Proceed east along the Infinite Corridor (opposite main entry) to the end of the corridor. Turn left to proceed to the elevator in Building 16. Go down ½ level. Turn left and then right to main corridor. You may continue straight ahead through 16, 56, 66 or go outside to right and proceed to your left along these buildings to Ames Street. Cross Ames Street, then go up ramp directly ahead and go into the first entrance on your right of E15, the Media Lab. Proceed to your left to the elevators and go down one floor to the Bartos Hall.
MIT Campus Police (Building W89)
Proceed to the elevator behind left pier (opposite main entry) to the basement. Turn left to the ramp leading outside to Massachusetts Ave. Then, go to the right along Massachusetts Avenue to the lights at Vassar Street. Cross Mass. Ave. and proceed along Vassar Street beyond Simmons Hall to Bldg W89. The route proceeds along the Vassar Street sidewalk. The North side is not accessible.
MIT Chapel (Building W15)
Proceed to the elevator behind left pier (opposite main entry) to the basement. Turn left to ramp leading outside to Massachusetts Avenue. Cross the street at the lights and proceed straight ahead. Veer left on the sidewalk before the steps and proceed to the left to the Chapel entry.
MIT Federal Credit Union (Building NE48)
This building is located at 700 Tech Square.The Credit Union is on the first floor and can be reached by the front and rear doors from the public streets or via the Tech Square walkways, which are accessible.
MIT Medical (Building E23)
Proceed east along the Infinite Corridor (opposite main entry) to the end of the corridor. Turn left to the elevator in Building 16. Go down ½ level. Turn left and then right to main corridor. You may continue straight ahead through 16, 56, 66 or go outside to right and proceed to your left along these buildings to Ames Street. Cross Ames Street, then go up the ramp directly ahead past the Media Lab on your right to the entry to Medical in E23.
MIT Museum (Building N52)
Proceed to the elevator behind left pier (opposite main entry) to the basement. Turn left to the ramp leading outside to Mass Ave. Go right along Massachusetts Avenue to the lights at Vassar Street. Cross Vassar and continue across Albany Street and across Windsor Street. Continue one block to Front Street. The MIT Museum will be on your right across Front Street.
President's House - Gray House (Building E1)
Proceed east along the Infinite Corridor (opposite main entry) to the end of the corridor. Turn right and pass through Building 6 to the main corridor to the left in Building 2. Pass down ramp into Hayden Library. At end of corridor exit the library down the ramp. Leaving the ramp, go right continuing east past Walker on your right and tennis courts. Cross Ames Street and turn right and continue to Memorial Dr., then turn left and the Gray House is located on the left hand side at 111 Memorial Drive. There is a ramp to the entry hall and then a small elevator that goes to the first and second floors. There is also an accessible toilet off the library (the room the elevator goes to on the first floor).
Room 10-250
Proceed east along the Infinite Corridor (opposite main entry) to next main lobby (Lobby 10). Turn left and proceed to the elevator. Go to the 2nd floor, which brings you to the entry of 10-250. Once inside the room, accessible seating is at the front.
Room 26-100
Proceed east along the Infinite Corridor (opposite main entry) to the end of the corridor. Turn left to the elevator in Building 16. Go down 1/2 level to the first floor level of Building 16. Turn left and proceed straight ahead through the connecting hallway to Room 26-100. On the right is a double pair of doors which are open. These go into 26-100 on the left side of the lecture platform (as you face the blackboards). You then go across the platform to the flat seating area on the right side of the hall. It is suggested that you get there early, as otherwise one has to cross behind the speaker.
Rotch Library (Building 7, 2nd Floor)
Proceed to the elevator behind left pier (opposite main entry) to 2nd floor. Turn left to the library entry.
Stata Center (Building 32)
Proceed east along the Infinite Corridor (opposite main entry) to the end of the corridor. Turn left to the elevator in Building 16. Go down ½ level. Turn left and proceed straight ahead through connector past 26-100. Go through the next set of doors and then proceed right out of the breezeway to Stata.
Student Center (Building W20)
Proceed to the elevator behind left pier (opposite main entry) to the basement. Then, turn left to the ramp leading outside to Massachusetts Avenue. Cross the street at the lights and proceed straight ahead. Veer left on the sidewalk to bypass the steps and proceed to the entry level of the Student Center to the right.
Tang Hall (Building E51)
Proceed east along the Infinite Corridor (opposite main entry) to the end of the corridor. Turn right and pass through Building 6 to the main corridor to the left in Building 2. Pass down ramp into Hayden Library. At end of corridor exit the library down the ramp. Leaving the ramp, go right continuing east past Walker on your right and tennis courts. Cross Ames Street and continue along the right side of Amherst Street. Tang is the last building on right. Entry is at the corner of Ames and Wadsworth Streets.
Walker Memorial (Building 50)
Proceed east along the Infinite Corridor (opposite main entry) to the end of the corridor. Turn right and pass through Building 6 to the main corridor to the left in Building 2. Pass down ramp into Hayden Library. At end of corridor exit the library down the ramp. Walker is the building to the right of the library as you exit the ramp. Use the vertical lift on the side of the building and enter from the terrace. To get to the basement continue from the terrace and into the adjacent lobby. The route is then past Morss Hall (the main dining room) to the opposite corner, then go through the doors to the pantry, then to the elevator.
Wheel Chair Lifts (Buildings 33/35)
- The ramped entrance in Building 33 is accessed from the road behind the buildings opposite Building 37.
- The main lift goes from this ramp to the 1st floor of building 33, which also leads to the elevator in 35. Access to all floors is then possible because the floors of 33 and 35 are at the same level except for the 2nd floor.
- There is a small lift at the 2nd floor connecting the elevator to the 2nd floor of 33.
- There is also a continuous route at the 4th floor connecting all North area buildings. This in turn connects directly to all the 3rd floors in the Main Group (Buildings 1-14). Since this links to all elevators, it is a good route for getting around. There is one detour from 37 to 34 via the elevators and the 3rd floors, as the 4th floor of Building 39 is locked off.
Zesiger Sports and Fitness Center/Z-Center (Building W35)
Proceed to the elevator behind left pier (opposite main entry) to the basement. Turn left to the ramp leading outside to Massachusetts Avenue. Cross the street at the lights and proceed straight ahead. Veer left on the sidewalk to bypass steps. In front of Student Center, turn left on the main walk and continue down long ramp to the right of Kresge and proceed to the Z- Center.
