Spring 2021 Housing Assignment Update

November 19, 2020

Dear Undergraduate Student,

Thank you for your interest in on-campus housing for Spring 2021!  If you’re receiving this message, it means we’ve received your Spring 2021 Housing Application and are reviewing your submitted preferences.  We understand you are eager to learn your on-campus housing assignment for next semester (and we’re excited to share it!) but we require a few extra days to finalize this information.  Your  placement results will be shared with you via email next Tuesday, November 24 four days later than initially anticipated.

Housing & Residential Services (HRS) will make every effort to assign students to one of their top residence hall preferences, however, there is a possibility that a student may receive an assignment in any residence based on space availability.  In addition to housing sophomores and juniors who have previously resided on campus, we will welcome first-year students for the first time along with FSILG residents and sophomores and juniors who had previously lived off campus.

Due to the severity of the COVID-19 pandemic, it is imperative that we limit the overall density of each residential community.  We ask for your flexibility regarding building assignments for next semester. It may become necessary to reassign building placements after the initial round of assignments are released to balance the distribution of residents across the houses while navigating density restrictions and potential shifts in the number of students who commit to living on campus next semester. Any changes will be based on your preferences and will be shared with you as soon as possible prior to your arrival on campus.  All group members (if applicable) will be kept together if an adjustment is needed.

If your plans  change and you no longer require on-campus housing for Spring 2021, please complete the cancellation form within your MyHousing portal.  While you may cancel your assignment at any time before January 1, 2021 without penalty, we ask that you submit your cancellation earlier if you have no intention of living on campus.  In particular, canceling before the Building Placement Switch Lottery closes on December 14 will help us better accommodate your classmates who have committed to on-campus housing for the spring.

The Building Placement Switch Lottery will remain available to students who would like to request a different housing assignment after the results of the lottery are shared next Tuesday.  The updated dates for housing processes are as follows:

  • Tuesday, November 24 - Building Placements Shared & Building Placement Switch Lottery Opens
  • Monday, December 14 - Building Placement Switch Lottery Closes
  • Monday, December 21 - Building Placement Switch Lottery Results Shared
  • Friday, January 1 - Deadline to Cancel Spring 2021 Housing Without Penalty
  • Wednesday, January 27 -  Room Assignments Shared

Thank you for your continued patience and understanding as we continue to work on finalizing Spring 2021 housing assignment information.  Please visit the Spring 2021 Housing Dashboard for regular updates or reach out to the team at HRS with any questions via email at ughousingspring2021@mit.edu

Sincerely,
