MEng On-campus Graduate Housing Opportunities

July 29, 2020

Dear MEng Student,

Greetings from MIT Housing & Residential Services (HRS)!  We hope this message finds you well.  Given your recent classification as a graduate student for housing purposes, we are writing to share on-campus graduate housing opportunities for Fall 2020.

If you are interested in on-campus housing for the 2020-2021 academic year, HRS has developed a housing request process specifically or MEng students.  Requests will follow a rolling waitlist process in which students who submit a request will be offered a housing assignment on a first-come, first-served basis depending on students’ housing preferences and housing availability. Offers will begin the week of August 10, 2020.

Below, please find answers to some frequently asked questions, including the deadline to submit a request and other helpful information about the process.  If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out to HRS via email at gradhousingfall2020@mit.edu.

Sincerely,

TASHA COPPETT
Assistant Director of Off-Campus and Graduate Housing
Housing & Residential Services

How do I submit a request for on-campus graduate housing?

  • The request form is currently available through the HRS website by clicking here.

What is the deadline to submit a request?

  • The deadline for MEng students to submit an on-campus graduate housing request is August 31, 2020.

What on-campus housing options are available to graduate students?

  • Each graduate residence has their own unique residential community and living environment.  The list of available graduate housing options for MEng students is available within the request form linked above.  Please visit the graduate housing webpage for more information about each of these residences, including housing rates. Please note that not all graduate housing options are available to MEng students and proof of family documentation is required for family housing.

If I receive a housing assignment offer, how long do I have to make a decision?

  • Once an offer is extended, applicants will have 2 business days to accept or decline the offer.  Offers will begin the week of August 10, 2020 and will continue on a rolling basis given availability.

If I submit a request and a housing assignment is offered, am I required to move on campus?

  • No.  Requests are non-binding.  Students who are offered an on-campus housing assignment will have the opportunity to accept or decline the on-campus housing opportunity.  Assignments become binding only after a housing license agreement has been signed by the student.

Please note, however, that students who decline an offer must re-submit a request to be added back into the waitlist process and will not retain their previous position on the waiting list.

Are there any specific housing policies or community expectations due to COVID-19?

  • Yes.  Please visit the COVID-19 student policy webpage for additional information regarding housing policies and community expectations.  Students should read this information carefully prior to requesting on-campus housing.

What is the likelihood that I will receive a housing assignment?

  • It’s hard to predict. Unit availability will change on a weekly basis depending on housing demand, student preferences and cancellations.  The waitlist process is rolling and offers will be made to students on a regular basis according to unit availability.

If I receive an assignment, when can I move on-campus?

  • Housing units that are offered to MEng students are typically available for move-in at the time of the offer.  HRS will share any specific moving details with students who are offered a housing assignment.  HRS will remain as flexible as possible to meet students’ housing needs and unique circumstances. The earliest available move-in dates are in mid-August.  The move-in period will continue into the fall as housing is assigned.

As part of the request form, students may submit move-in date preferences.  Once an on-campus housing offer has been made by HRS, the specific move-in date will be confirmed with the student.  Please note that HRS is unable to accommodate moves into graduate housing on Fridays or Saturdays due to Institute-required COVID-19 testing within 24 hours of arriving on campus and MIT Medical testing availability.

What is the license agreement period?

  • The license agreement period will be communicated by HRS at the time of the offer and typically extends from the students’ confirmed move-in date to July 31, 2021.

May I terminate my on-campus housing agreement prior to July 31, 2021?

  • Please visit the HRS website for specific information regarding early termination, including approved reasons for early termination and any applicable penalties.

Does HRS have off-campus housing resources?

  • Yes.  Please visit the MIT Off-Campus Housing website for rental listings and resources to help you with your search.  You may also email Marly at fma@mit.edu with any questions.
