Fall 2021 Housing Update (Sophomores)

April 23, 2021

Dear Student,

We write to share that the building placement results for rising sophomores have been delayed until Monday, June 7, 2021.  Housing & Residential Services (HRS), in collaboration with DormCon, have updated this timeline to prevent future adjustments to students’ building placements as described below. As a reminder, if you no longer require on-campus housing for next year, please complete the penalty-free Fall 2021 Cancellation Form in your MyHousing portal as soon as possible, but no later than June 21.

Reasons for the delay:

  • If we assigned building placements now, it is possible that we would have to reshuffle residents' assignments at a later date. We know having a final building assignment is important to students, so by waiting a few more weeks, we can see a more complete picture of demand for MIT housing that will enable us to make placements in early June and avoid adjusting residents’ assignments.

  • We’ve received a high volume of Fall 2021 Housing Applications from rising sophomores, juniors and seniors as we prepare to ramp-up to full campus operations.

  • We expect that students’ housing plans may change during the course of the coming weeks, especially in light of the anticipated full re-opening of FSILG houses this fall.  If you're an FSILG member who is planning to live in your FSILG this fall, please work with your house leadership to confirm your FSILG placement by May 28 and don’t forget to cancel your on-campus housing request.

If you would like to amend your submitted preferences:

  • Rising sophomores who would like to amend their submitted housing preferences may resubmit their Fall 2021 Sophomore Housing Lottery Application within their MyHousing portal between Monday, April 26 (at 9:00 am ET) and Wednesday, May 12 (at 11:59 pm ET). If you click on the “resubmit” application, please remember to click through each page and click “finish” at the end to ensure that your updated application is properly submitted.

If you no longer require 2021-2022 on-campus housing:

  • Complete the penalty-free Fall 2021 Housing Cancellation Form within your MyHousing portal as soon as possible, but no later than June 21, 2021.  This will help us assign your classmates who have committed to on-campus housing for the spring according to their housing preferences.

We understand that you are likely eager to learn your building placement and we appreciate your continued patience as we seek to gather a more accurate understanding of Fall 2021 housing needs.  Please visit the Fall 2021 Housing Dashboard for regular updates and don’t hesitate to reach out to the team at Housing & Residential Services with any immediate questions via email at residence@mit.edu.
