2021-2022 Housing Application Update (Rising Sophomores)

May 21, 2021

Dear Rising Sophomores,

It has come to our attention that a number of students may have inadvertently submitted their staple group preferences incorrectly, or did not realize they could submit staple group preferences, within their Fall 2021 Sophomore Housing Lottery Application.  We are writing to clarify the process for submitting your grouping preferences, and to share that the application has been temporarily reopened if you would like to make adjustments.

Students who would like to live in the same residence hall with specific classmates are able to form a “staple” group of up to four total students under the “Form a Roommate Group” header in the housing application.  Each person in the group must enter the names of the other students in their application and provide the same building preferences which will guarantee all group members are placed in the same building. Please note that group member selection only applies to building placement which is separate and distinct from the room assignment process coordinated at the house level.  Room Assignment Chairs may use group member information to make room assignments, although this process varies by residence hall.

Rising sophomores who would like to amend their submitted grouping preferences may resubmit their Fall 2021 Sophomore Housing Lottery Application within their MyHousing portal between today and Wednesday, May 26 (at 12:00 pm Noon ET). If you click on the “resubmit” application, even to review your submission, please remember to click through each page and click “finish” at the end to ensure that your updated application is properly submitted.

As a reminder, if you're an FSILG member who is planning to live in your FSILG this fall (they’ll be open!), please work with your house leadership to confirm your FSILG placement as soon as possible and no later than next Friday, May 28.  Also, if you confirm FSILG housing, please don’t forget to cancel your on-campus assignment within MyHousing.

We’re sorry that this message is coming at a particularly busy time of the semester but we wanted to make sure we capture your housing preferences accurately for the next academic year.  Results of the building placement will be shared with rising sophomores on Monday, June 7.  If you have any questions, please visit the Fall 2021 Housing Dashboard for helpful information or reach out to the HRS team via email at residence@mit.edu or by telephone at (617) 253-2811.
