2021-2022 Building Placement (Rising Sophomores)

June 7, 2021

Dear Rising Sophomore,

Drum roll please...

We’re writing to share some exciting information— your confirmed building assignment for the 2021-2022 academic year!  We’re pleased to inform you that you have been assigned to live in:

[ Residence Hall ]

Lots (and we mean lots!) of your classmates are interested in on-campus housing this fall so it’s unlikely Housing & Residential Services (HRS) will be able to accommodate requests for building assignment changes submitted through the Housing Waitlist Process.  Building switch opportunities may be available through the Residence Exploration “REX” process (see below) according to housing availability.

Okay, so what now?  Here’s a quick list of upcoming housing dates to keep on your radar:

  • If you no longer require on-campus housing next year, please submit the penalty-free cancellation form in MyHousing by Monday, June 21, 2021 at 11:59 pm ET.  Cancelations submitted after this deadline will be subject to a $250 penalty.

  • Room assignments (coordinated at the house level) will be shared with you via email by HRS on Wednesday, August 4, 2021. Please contact your Room Assignment Chair with questions regarding the room assignment process.

  • Move-in for sophomores who opt into REX programming (see below) is Sunday, August 29, 2021 until Monday, August 30, 2021

  • Move-in for sophomores who do not opt into REX programming is Saturday, September 4 until Monday, September 6, 2021

This fall, the Division of Student Life, in collaboration with DormCon and the Undergraduate Association, is inviting the Class of 2024 to S’more Welcome a week of events designed to help rising sophomores learn more about the residence halls, campus life, and the surrounding community, as well as get to know their fellow classmates.  See below for additional details regarding how you can express interest in participating in this exciting opportunity to explore the residences and to connect with classmates.

Keep an eye out for updates about campus life this fall as we get closer to the start of the fall semester.  Until then, check out the Fall 2021 Housing Dashboard for regular housing updates, or send us your questions via email at residence@mit.edu.

Sincerely,

What is S’more Welcome?

  • S’more Welcome will include REX (Residence Exploration) events hosted by each residence hall, a variety of campus programming hosted by staff and faculty from across the Institute, and opportunities to explore the Cambridge and Boston communities!

Who is eligible to participate in S’more Welcome?

  • All sophomores, including FSILG residents, will be able to participate in REX, and sophomores living in one of MIT’s ten undergraduate residence halls will be able to opt-in to participate in SYRE (Second-Year Residence Exchange - an expansion of FYRE).

Am I required to participate in this program?

  • No.  S’more Welcome is not required.  If rising sophomores choose to participate, they will be able to move onto campus during Sunday, August 29 or Monday, August 30. Move-in for sophomores who are not participating will begin on Saturday, September 4th, which coincides with the start of FSILG recruitment.  If you have an approved early return from another program you do not need to sign up for S’more Welcome, however you can register for individual events when the sign-ups are made available in July.

Are there any additional costs associated with attending?

  • The program and early arrival have no additional fee, but students who sign up for S’more Welcome are required to commit to the entire week of programming.  Those who arrive early and do not attend the week’s events may be charged an early arrival fee.

How do I express interest in attending S’more Welcome?

  • If you are interested in attending S’more Welcome please let us know by Monday, June 21 by submitting this form.  This initial interest form is non-binding and the number of submissions will help us plan for the program.  During the summer, more information will be provided to students who express interest in attending S’more Welcome!

Questions?

  • Planning for S’more Welcome is currently underway by the Division of Student Life, DormCon, and the Undergraduate Association.  Additional information about the program and activities are forthcoming.  Any immediate questions may be emailed to smore2021@mit.edu.
