Social Host Training

Social Host Training is designed to empower students who are hosting social gatherings with alcohol to plan and host successful and safe events. This interactive, two-hour workshop covers topics such as: 
  • Understanding Massachusetts social host liability laws and MIT policies
  • Tips for planning and hosting events
  • Recognizing signs of alcohol intoxication
  • Strategies for intervening with intoxicated guests
  • Developing concrete strategies for improve your events
Social Host Training was developed collaboratively by staff from the following departments: 
  • Alcohol and Other Drug Services
  • Fraternities, Sororities, and Independent Living Groups
  • Residential Education
  • Student Activities Office
  • Violence Prevention and Response
Please note: you may be required to complete Social Host Training before registering a party or event where alcohol will be served.

Social Host Fund

The Social Host Fund is a program that was created by a partnership between the Alcohol and Other Drug Services (AODS), the FSILG Office, Student Activities Office and the Office for Undergraduate Residential Life.  The program provides funds to subsidize the purchase of substantial food and water for events with alcohol for student organizations, residence halls, and FSILGs.
Guidelines and Important Program Information 
  • Substantial food consists of a variety and amount of food that can help offset the negative effects of alcohol. Examples of substantial food include: pizza, burritos, pasta, and other meals.
  • Only water purchases can be reimbursed.
  • It is suggested that you spend $3 per guest on food and water.
  • The amount of funds available ranges from $25-$100 depending on factors including: 
    • Number of attendees
    • Date and time of the event
    • Availability to the entire MIT community
    • Event plan
  • In order to qualify for funding support, the event needs to:
    • Be registered completely and accurately through the Atlas system
    • Follow all Institute policies, procedures and guidelines
  • Funding will be in the form of reimbursement.  Reimbursements will only be provided during the semester that the event is held.
  • As a reminder, the funds cannot be used for alcohol, mixers, decorations, very small gatherings, or off-campus events.
Apply for Funding 
Applications for funding should be submitted no later than 5 business days before the event is held, and should include:
  • Name of student
  • Name of living community or organization requesting reimbursement
  • Name of event
  • Date of event
  • Brief description of event
  • Anticipated number of attendees
  • Detailed description of food
