Diversity and Inclusion
The Student Activities Office is committed to advocating for and supporting all students at MIT, in an effort to create a greater sense of welcome, belonging, wellness, and excellence. The SAO works to accomplish this through an approach based on affirming identities, building community, and cultivating leadership.
The SAO strives to:
- Advise student organizations and student leaders within their respective communities, while also working with all students on being an inclusive leader.
- Provide events, programs, and workshops of an educational nature that allow students to actively engage with topics around diversity, inclusion, social justice, and difference.
- Provide opportunities that showcase various cultures and that allow students to explore new communities.
- Build connections between students, staff, faculty, and alumni.
- Create safe spaces for students to talk about their experiences.
The SAO supports the MIT community in multiple ways, and specifically through LBGT@MIT, the Office of Multicultural Programs, and Women@MIT. The Office of Multicultural Programs also directly works with and advises the Black Students' Union and the Latino Cultural Center.
