Share your love of learning
As a Tim Tutor, you will engage and challenge a Cambridge elementary or middle school child with reading and math activities. The goal is to improve their skills while fostering a love of reading and mathematics.
What is ReachOut Tim Tutors?
The ReachOut Tim Tutors program recruits, trains, and matches MIT students, faculty, staff, spouses, and partners with children at local community centers. ReachOut Tim Tutors is sponsored by the Priscilla King Gray Public Service Center in collaboration with local community partners.
Who can participate
We welcome student volunteers, and if you meet the requirements for federal work-study, you can earn a paycheck while providing this valuable community service.
We also welcome MIT staff, faculty, and spouses and partners!
How it works
You will be working with elementary school children who are formally enrolled in after-school programs at the Cambridge Community Center, the East End House, and The Margaret Fuller Neighborhood House.
The sessions are weekly and take place on the following days:
- Cambridge Community Center: Monday through Thursday, 3:30 pm to 5:30 pm
- East End House: 3 pm to 4 pm
- The Margaret Fuller Neighborhood House: 4 pm to 6 pm
What is the time commitment?
As a tutor, you will be working for one semester of consistent tutoring. Work-study participants have a two-hour minimum requirement, while volunteers work for one hour a week. Including transportation, your time commitment is about two to four hours each week.
If you are a new tutor, you will also need to attend:
- An orientation session
- An on-site orientation at the organization you will be volunteering. This will take place during your first hour of tutoring.
- A tutoring training session
