Effective July 1, 2009, MIT’s Division of Student Life (DSL) will be streamlined into five departments: Residential Life, Student Development and Support, the Department of Athletics, Physical Education and Recreation, Religious Life and DSL Administration.

By combining offices that have shared missions, DSL will be able to offer a more proactive, educational and developmental model of support and engagement at MIT. The reorganization will also help DSL to contribute its share of cost savings to MIT, consistent with the Institute-wide need to reduce expenses by 10-15% over the next two to three years.

At the heart of the reorganization is a merger of two departments:

The current Student Development and Student Support departments will become the Student Development and Support department. This new area will be led by Senior Associate Dean Barbara Baker, and will be comprised of Student Leadership and Activities, Student Citizenship, Crisis Management, Student Support Services, and Community Development and Substance Abuse.

DSL remains committed to supporting the overall student experience at MIT and to building on the gains that have been made in assisting students with the integration of student life and learning.
