If you are an undergraduate or incoming transfer/exchange student officially registered at MIT, you are eligible to live in an MIT undergraduate residence during the academic year. Spouses, children, or other relatives are not eligible to live in housing designated for single undergraduates. If you are married and/or have dependents, find out more about family housing on campus.
Your eligibility for residence in MIT undergraduate housing ends at the close of your eighth semester as a registered MIT student (excluding summer terms) or upon graduation or termination of MIT student status, whichever comes first.
Time spent away from the Institute counts toward those eight terms if you are still a registered MIT student. Examples: study abroad, approved transfer to another institution, or co-op programs.
If you choose to move off campus or to a FSILG, you will still be eligible for housing during your eight registered terms as an undergraduate. However, you are not guaranteed on-campus housing under those circumstances. If you do want to move to housing on campus after living off campus, fill out a housing request form to be placed on the waiting list for on-campus housing.
Students who were living in MIT on-campus housing as of March 1, 2020 and who continue to maintain their enrollment as registered MIT undergraduate students will be guaranteed future housing when MIT housing returns to normal operations and all residents are invited to return to campus for fall 2021. Consistent with existing policy, students who lived off campus prior to March 2020, or lived on campus in Spring 2020 and subsequently took a leave of absence, will not be guaranteed future housing.
If you meet the eligibility requirements, you may request a ninth term of housing in an undergraduate residence. Availability is limited.
Please note that we are unable to accept applications beyond the tenth term.
During the summer months, housing is open to eligible applicants.
Students take leave from MIT for several reasons. Most requests for leave are processed by Student Support Services (i.e., Voluntary Leave, Medical Leave) or are voted on by the Committee on Academic Performance (i.e., Required Leave).
Students who have taken leave and are not registered are required to vacate their on-campus housing assignment within 72 hours following official leave.
As students begin the process for readmission, they are encouraged to apply online for return housing. Students should apply in November for spring housing, and in March for fall housing. (Please note that a student's Kerberos ID must be active in order to complete the form.)
Once the Return from Leave Housing Request Form is submitted, students will be placed on a waiting list for the semester in which they are planning to return. Students will be assigned to housing in August if returning for the fall term, and in January if returning for the spring term. These assignments will be available just prior to Registration Day.
Housing & Residential Services works closely with Student Support Services to determine the priority and necessity of housing for all students returning from leave.
Students requesting to return to a specific hall or room should work directly with Housing & Residential Services to understand the process and possibility of being assigned back to a particular building or area of the building.
Undergraduate housing is guaranteed to students who are returning from an approved program away, if they were living in on-campus housing before they left.
Remember to submit an application to Housing & Residential Services in November if you will need spring housing, and in March if you will need fall housing.
If you are an undergraduate who will be receiving your degree at the end of the fall term and you are continuing as a graduate student at MIT for the spring term, you may remain in undergraduate housing for the spring term with permission from Housing & Residential Services, if you are wtihin your eight terms of housing eligibility.
A student who has withdrawn or been disqualified and who is petitioning this decision should notify Housing & Residential Services at once.
