FSILG Awards Celebrate FSILG Contributions at MIT
On April 27, faculty, staff, and affiliated students gathered in Twenty Chimneys for the annual s reception to present the 2014-2015 Fraternity, Sorority, and Independent Living Group (FSILG) Awards.
The event acknowledged individuals and groups that have showed initiative and have demonstrated high standards in ethics, academics, volunteerism, community, and other notable merits.
The prestigious Frederick G. Fasset, Jr. Award, given to the one member each from the Interfraternity Council, Panhellenic Council, and Independent Living Group Council, recognizes individuals “who have most unselfishly demonstrated the qualities of spirit, dedication, and service in furthering the ideals of MIT brotherhood, sisterhood, and membership excellence.” The recipients this year were Yasmin Inam ‘15 of Alpha Phi, Daniel Wang ‘16 of Zeta Beta Tau, and Erin Main ‘16 of Epsilon Theta.
Nine individuals received the Outstanding Alumnus/Volunteer Advisor Award for exceptional service. Kappa Alpha Theta sorority earned the Dr. David N. Rogers Ideals and Values Award. The D. Reid Weedon, Jr. ‘41 Award was presented to the FSILGs that have cultivated the most interaction between undergraduates and alumni. First place went to Zeta Beta Tau fraternity, second place to Alpha Chi Omega sorority, and the Honorable Mention went to Phi Beta Epsilon fraternity.
The FSILG Advocate Award was presented to MIT police, represented at the reception by Captain Cheryl Vossmer, Sergeant Richard Sullivan, and Sergeant Andrew Turco. The award is given to members of the MIT community that work on behalf of the FSILG students. There was an unscripted moment; upon the announcement the room erupted in a spontaneous standing ovation that lasted for several minutes.
The event was an enjoyable culmination and celebration of the work done by the FSILGs over the last academic year, and it allowed for all members to come together in a celebration of community. Many other individuals and chapters were recognized for additional merits.
