New weekly reflection in the MIT Chapel

Need help with your outlook? Take a moment to look within.

That's the recommendation of the Institute's chaplains, who are starting "Tuesdays in the Chapel at MIT," a new, weekly service dedicated to reflection, meditation, and inspiration. "The goal is to give people a chance to center themselves, so they can focus, meditate, and think about how they will approach the week," says Dr. Robert Randolph, Chaplain to the Institute.

Hosted in the campus chapel, the brief sessions will run from 8:30 to 8:50 a.m. each Tuesday morning throughout the school year. Randolph says the tone will be deliberately simple: a short musical piece, a reading, words of encouragement, and time for reflection. The theme for this year is "Finding Hope in Hard Times."

"The intention and focus is going to be, 'How do you get through hard times?" Randolph says. "We all know that many of our friends are struggling. Some of us are struggling in these difficult times, as well."

All are welcome. Chaplains from all religious traditions will take the lead for the first few weeks, and as the rhythm of the gathering is established, others will add their voices. After the service and before 9 AM, coffee and juice will be available in W11.

For more information, contact Dr. Randolph at (617) 258-5484 or randolph@mit.edu.

MIT to Host World Premier of Alum's Film

The talents of MIT alumni are not confined to just science and technology. Several have a natural affinity for the arts as well, like filmmaking. In fact, a local alum, Bruce Twickler '67, has a documentary film company, Docema, right here in Cambridge. His company has just finished the production of the two-hour film, "Broadside," and will hold the world premier screening at MIT on September 29th.

Broadside" tells the story of the fiercest naval war in the age of sail. The rivalry between the British and the Dutch spanned oceans, continents and empires. The film is cast in the actual houses, gardens and forts of the seventeenth century and uses 3D animations to bring 1660 New Amsterdam and London to life. As those who have seen Twickler's previous documentary film "Damrell's Fire", the technical sophistication is simply stunning.

The evening includes refreshments and a chance to visit beforehand with Bruce Twickler ‘67, who will discuss the making of this engaging film, and how, after a varied but successful career in the software industry, he founded a documentary film production company.

“Broadside” will be shown in the Kirsch Auditorium of the Stata Center from 6:30 PM to 9:30 PM on Tuesday, September 29. To register, please go to the MIT Club of Boston web site for this event. The cost is $10 for MIT Club of Boston members, $15 for non-members, and $20 at the door. The event is also open to the general public.

Division of Student Life Flu Resources

The Institute’s preparations for flu season include not just medical and academic assistance, but the full support of the Division of Student Life (DSL). If you get the flu, the offices in DSL are here to make sure you get the assistance you need.

Be Prepared.

Visit the MIT Medical H1N1 FAQ to learn more about prevention, symptoms, and vaccinations. Stock up early on food, water, and medical supplies in case you become ill and have to stay home. Know who to contact in your Residence Hall or FSILG to alert them should you become sick.

If you begin to feel sick, let MIT know.

Review MIT Medical's H1N1 FAQ or call MIT Medical at (617) 253-3381 to review your symptoms and decide next steps. MIT Medical will need your permission to alert Residential Life about your condition. Your Housemasters, GRTs, and RAs can provide you with support and resources.

If you become ill, stay home and get better.

If you're sick, your top priority should be to get well. Follow MIT Medical's guidelines for recovery, which ask that you stay home and rest.

We understand how important academics are at MIT, but it is in everyone's best interest that you stay home and get well. Contact your professors to let them know you are ill and will not be attending class or completing assignments. Should you need additional support in your discussions with your professors, contact Student Support Services at (617) 253-4861.

 MIT Community Gardens

Gardening can be a humbling yet rewarding experience, as the 32 gardeners who participated in the MIT Community Gardens project discovered. The three year pilot project in urban sustainable agriculture was started by Cheryl Vossmer, MIT Police Sgt. and Ryan Gray, Libraries Administrative Assistant and Public Service Support Associate. Participants were selected in a lottery last Spring for a chance to have a plot on the roof of West Garage or on the ground along the Albany Street Garage.

Ninety-two staff/faculty entered the lottery, a much higher and exciting number than expected. “One of the things that makes this project so unique is that MIT is about engineering, not about agriculture. Yet there is so much excitement about agriculture here,” said Vossmer.

Once selected, the gardeners were required to purchase an Earthbox and their own plants. Earthboxes are low-cost, compact and water-efficient containers, complete with organic soil and fertilizer. “The Earthboxes were a perfect solution to the problem of finding green space on campus to grow crops,” said Gray. They require no soil testing, and everything is contained in the box, making for easy cleanup and re-usability.
