Faculty invited to learn more at informational reception on March 8
In 1933, Dr. Avery Allen Ashdown PhD ’24 was named the first housemaster in MIT’s residential system. He took up residence in a complex of buildings dubbed Graduate House (later renamed Senior House), and shaped the burgeoning community by identifying 46 graduate students to live in the dorm. So began the MIT tradition of faculty heads of house.

Suzy Nelson started as MIT’s vice president and dean for student life on July 1, 2016. She came to the Institute after a national search and brings broad experience from managing student affairs and residential life at Colgate University, Harvard University, and Cornell University to the role. During her first semester at the Institute, Nelson worked with students, faculty, and staff to invigorate the Division of Student Life’s mission and goals, and is leading major projects related to residence hall development and renovation, student support, and diversity and inclusion.

Violence Prevention and Response (VPR) is MIT’s primary on-campus resource for preventing and responding to interpersonal violence, including sexual assault, dating and domestic violence, stalking, and sexual harassment.

The MIT Hobby Shop began during the 1937-38 academic year. Vannevar Bush, then vice president of MIT, granted a group of sixteen students permission to use a room in the basement of Building 2 as a woodworking and metal shop.

Walking through Lobby 10 after a final exam, students may find some smiling people offering free hot chocolate. This lifesaving beverage—as well as a number of other sweet treats—are offered to MIT students thanks to the MIT Lab for Chocolate Science.

Students, faculty, staff, and visitors entering the second floor of the Stratton Student Center (W20) have long been greeted by the Jerome B. Wiesner Student Art Gallery—a gift from MIT’s Class of 1983 that has served as a home for student art exhibits for more than thirty years.
