Undergraduate Residence Hall Closure

The following letter was sent to the residence hall communities from Housing and Residential Services (HRS):

Dear Resident,

In light of yesterday’s announcement from President Reif, we are writing to share important information regarding an accelerated campus move-out process (you may also find this evening’s message from Chancellor Barnhart, Dean Nelson, and Vice Chancellor Waitz helpful).

We want to reiterate that the teams from Housing & Residential Services (HRS), Residential Education, and throughout the Division of Student Life, are here to make this transition go as smoothly as possible.

Please review the attached FAQ document that will help address some of your immediate questions regarding the move-out process. Important details are also highlighted below for quick reference:

Required Move Out Date*

Students should move out as soon as they are able to, and no later than:

Tuesday, March 17, 2020 at 12:00 pm

What to Pack

Pack all personal belongings. Remember to take all valuable items with you and discard any unwanted items. Personal items left in rooms or common spaces may be discarded. A limited number of moving boxes will be available. Trash receptacles and recycling bins will be supplied for each residence hall. Students living in suites should empty their communal refrigerator.

Boxes & Carts

A limited number of boxes will be available within each residence hall starting on Wednesday, March 11 in the late afternoon. Carts will also be available in the lobby to help facilitate the move-out process.

Summer Storage

Very limited storage will be available in each residence hall. Carefully consider which items you may need before the end of summer. Each student will only be allowed to store one box and a mini-fridge or two boxes maximum. Boxes that are being stored must be clearly labeled with student name, Kerberos ID, building and room number, class year and home address. Please create and retain an inventory of the items being left in storage for your records. Please consider shipping items where possible.

Do not leave valuable items in summer storage. Take them with you.  See summer storage policies on insurance to make sure you protect the items you do leave.

Please contact your House Operations Manager or Area Director for further details. Private storage pods cannot be obtained without permission from MIT Parking and Transportation. A Pod Pass must be placed on all pods and they must be placed in a specific parking space while on the MIT campus. Please review the Pod/Temporary Storage Protocol document and contact (617) 258-6510 or mitparking@mit.edu.

Mail Forwarding

The move-out envelope will provide a blank address field for residents to identify their preferred mailing address for the remainder of the semester. All packages received after students move-out will be returned to sender.

Limited exceptions will be considered to allow certain undergraduate students to remain on campus. To request an exception, you must complete the Undergraduate Form to Request Permission to Remain on Campus (link recently e-mailed to you) by noon on Friday, March 13.

Questions regarding specific moving logistics should be directed to your House Operations Manager or Area Director.  You may also e-mail undergradcovidmoveout@mit.edu.

Questions related to courses or other academic-related inquiries may be directed to the Student Support Services (S3) Dean.
